Hi,

I'm looking for a low power FM transmitter for re-transmitting various
audio source within my house and I'm considering the Veronica 50mW
stereo one (http://www.veronica.co.uk/50mw-stereo.htm) and the NRG Kits
50mW (http://www.nrgkits.com/radiokits/lpstfm.htm).

I gather that they are not PLL-based so I'm concerned that they won't be
stable enough. Does anyone have any experience with either of these? Are
there any suitable alternatives (preferably available in the UK)?

I am inclined to favour the Veronica as it comes in a built/tested boxed
version with a PSU.

Thanks in advance,

Mark

You're asking about information on an *illegal* device in a broadcasting
group? How quaint.

In any case, the FM band is so crowded with stations both legal and
illegal I doubt you'd find a 'hole' anyway.

Interestingly, the Veronica site states that it illegal to use these devices
in the UK.
One vendor of similar kit got "done" with the charge "Conspiracy to commit
an offence under the WT Acts". Mind you this was after a number of
warnings.

If by chance you're referring to NRG, it was back in 91 where Stephen
only got into trouble as his line of transmitters were VFO controlled.
They could not meet the RA spec's for frequency stability therefore no
way could they be used at any liceable station.

It boiled down to that! I think he still offers these for export but his
main line are all rock based PLL's and comfortably meet spec's even if
they are not built into 19" rack with a Harris badge.

Westgate FM (RSL) in Basildon are currently running a 20w FM TX that I
supplied from NRG. Together with an Inovonnics processor and Jaybeam
folded dipole for the antenna they sound very good 5+ miles away.

He did crosspost it to the Pirate group so at least he's aware it's illegal!

It might be down with you but it isn't up here, Off the top of my head
I can only think of 8 stations and 5 of those are the nationals and
one National Region... OK some you can get (badly) on more than one
frequency but there is acres of empty space between the BBC National
stations.

I'm supprised some pirates concider buying. They usually build one on
a piece of wood and shove the thing down a stench pipe, or break into
the nearest BBC/IBA Tx site.

Most pirates are on air to serve the local space cadets, so I don't think
finding a 'hole' in the FM band is of any worry.

The NRG one is slightly better, and they do offer a ready-built option.

They're pretty stable, assuming that they're going to be used indoors, with
no major temeperature changes.

Another option you could consider is the PCI-Max from
www.pcs-electronics.com
This fits inside your computer, and is PLL-controlled. You can also stream
MP3s or any other source with ease.
