For some time, in some newsgroups, some posts appear in something like
Digest format?

They just have the "Archive" and "Delete" tabs at the top.

I have not found how it was turned on so how it can be turned off.

Done a search of the Thunderbird help files but can't find anything.

How can I turn it off?

click on the "twisty >" to the left of the subject column?
Or click on any bold author name to 'zoom in' to that particular message

There is no effective way to delete a usenet message. Not all servers
respect the request, and it comes back to life everywhere at the next
system sync.
