(too old to reply)

Apologies if I'm off topic.

Is there a DAB Radio with timer recording to SD Memory Card cabable of
recording the shipping forcast on R4 FM. If none available other
sugestions gratefully received. Ability to record LW would be a bonus.
TIA Peter

Why would you want to record FM on a DAB radio?

If you want to record from DAB (but not FM or LW) "The Bug" from Pure
Digital can do the job. I haven't tried it because I live in a DABless town.
Apparently the firmware has improved so it doesn't throw away the end of
timed recordings any more!

Peter

I'm not sure the shipping forecast is carried on DAB.
There used to be a permanent 'R4 LW' stream on DAB, but
now I think its use is restricted to 'Today in Parliament'
on an 'as and when' basis. Cricket, as carried on R4 LW, is
simulcast on DAB via the R5 Sports Xtra stream (also part time)

It's carried at the times when it is on both the 'FM' and 'LW' versions
such as 12:45am, which is most of the time.

Coming back to the original question, there is the Pure Bug and I
noticed an advert the other day for a Roberts radio with hard-drive
recording (not sure about the SD memory card on either though)

The other option is to do what I've done and get a PC based DAB reciever
- either a PSION Wavefinder or PCI card

I've got a Bug (but the penicillin is sorting it out...) and it'll do
fine for recording the forecast. You can set up to 9 timers, and they
are very flexible. The recent software update sorted out all the
problems that could occur with recordings. If the OP would like a
specimen recording, drop me a line.

The just-before-01.00 one certainly is, on normal R4.

*According to my calculations, the problem doesn't exist.

If I remember correctly, the Shipping Forecast is at

05.36 (All freqs)
12.01 (MW/LW only)
17.54 (MW/LW only)
00.48 (All freqs)

Just checked on BBC website, and I was right.

They lie, of course...

"The music played before the Shipping Forecast is 'Sailing By' composed
by Ronald Binge. Unfortunately, the version of 'Sailing By' we use is
not available commercially. However, a similar recording, featuring the
late Ronnie Aldrich on the piano, has been issued by: Seaward Records
Ltd, Strathallan Castle, Port St Mary, Isle of Man. The tune is also
available on a CD, 'The Music of Ronald Binge', from Marco Polo
Records, number 8.223515."

I've got a copy of the exact same Perry/Gardner orchestra version the
Beeb use. It's on the EMI double CD "The Great British Experience". The
original is stereo, but the Beeb broadcast a mono mixdown.

What there is no commercial recording of is the "Radio 4 UK Theme",
which the Beeb have been known occasionally to re-record.

It started out as library music. Came across it once in an edit suite. But
can't remember the details.

It was also released on the BBC World of Sound CD in 1997 but the sleeve
doesn't give any more details other than it being composed by Ronald Binge
and played by The Perry/Garner orchestra.

Yes, the thing by Fritz Spiegl. (Glad you said about the rerecording - I
sometimes thought it was only me that thought that!) Many years ago, I wrote
to ask, and they said no, it isn't available, but provided it's for your own
use, you can record it off-air if you want. I wish I could find the letter -
not so much because of that, but because it also included a (duplicated)
letter from Fritz Spiegl himself, giving - in a light-hearted manner - notes
on the piece.

I have often thought they could do it as a CD single (you know, one of the 3"
or so ones) - called "the ends of the day" or something like that, with R4UK,
Sailing By, and the National Anthem. It would I'm sure sell well to we fogies
(young and old)!

I noticed the other day that at the start of the Area Forecast that follows
the Shipping Forecast, the phrase 'general synopsis' has been replaced by
'general situation'

Whatever next.

Is 'Sailing By' safe?

If you're going the PC route the other options are audio streaming on
the internet from bbc.co.uk then download to the SD card. Or if you
have a PC TV card and SKY you can get radio 4 on Sky channel 854

Or a DVB-T / Freeview PC card and record it from the Radio 4 audio carried
on SDN Mux A (last time I looked)?

Just in case it is not essetnial that you have the BBC person reading
it .. you could get the "current" version with a very simple fetch of
a small web page (i.e. suitable for dial-up and probably even mobile
phone browser)
